Google AdSense

First and foremost let me say that we do not in any way represent Google. We have seen the evolution of the Google AdSense program, and through our own experience, have built a knowledge base about what works and doesn’t work in terms of the AdSense program. With that being said, lets examine this Internet advertising powerhouse known as Google AdSense.
The Google AdSense program is the most popular ad program today for webmasters. Online advertising, if done properly can make a webmaster very wealthy. But why do most webmasters make very little money from the Google AdSense program. Many webmasters believe that all you need to do is put up some AdSense ads on your sites and sit back and let the money come in. This is not the case. To make a lot of money from the Google AdSense program, it takes an enormous amount of work, mixed with a lot of thinking, and study and then study some more in terms of what works for other people and what does not work. No free lunch here.
The starting point, before putting up any site where you want to run Google AdSense ads, is to create the premise that the reason you are building a site is not to run Google AdSense ads, but rather the first and foremost reason should be that you want to provide a source of information to the public. You want the visitor to your site to have some benefit from reading your content. This is true for a commercial site where a product or service is being sold, and it is true for a purely informational site. The point being, put your visitor first, and oh, by the way, lets put some AdSense ads on the page. Once this is set in your mind, then you can do the proper keyword research. Lets look at what this keyword research should consist of.
In terms of keyword research, first you need to make sure that people are searching on the search engines using the primary keyword phrase that you selected for your site. And by the way, you should select a keyword phrase and not a keyword simply because a keyword phrase will have less competition among other websites.
After you have selected a keyword phrase then you want to know to what degree is there competition among other websites. You can do this by simply performing a search query at Google, since most people use Google when using a search engine. Look at the top of the search result page and Google will tell you how many other sites in their database have that keyword phrase. You want this number to be as low as possible.
You then need to find out if there is high competition among advertisers for that keyword phrase. Or another way of looking at this aspect is what is the cost advertisers will pay per click (CPC). More competition, higher cost per click the advertiser must pay, and more money to Google and you the publisher.
To assimilate data pertaining to the number of people searching using a particular keyword phrase and to find out what the CPC is you can use the following sites:
Google Adword Traffic Estimator
Digital Point Keyword Suggestion Tool
The next step is to drive traffic to your sites. There is copious amounts of information online about how to drive traffic to your sites.
In summary, to make money from Google AdSense you need to do the following:
1) Produce sites which provide a benefit to the public. This means provide unique content and following Google’s guidelines for webmasters.
2) Make sure people are searching using the keyword phrase you selected for your page. If say only 30 people are searching using your keyword phrase, then your effort is futile. Go to the Digital Point URL mentioned above for this information.
3) Make sure that competition among other websites is not to high. Again, your effort is futile if your site can never be found from a search engine query.
4) Make sure that there is plenty of competition among advertisers for your keyword phrase. This is another way of saying that you need to make sure that the cost advertisers pay per click is high (CPC).
5) Drive traffic to your sites. There is enough information on how to drive traffic to your site to fill an entire page, and therefore another article. Information about how to drive traffic is readily found online. First and foremost is to do rank well in Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Again, information on this is readily available online.
Even after doing all of this work, there are still some sites that just do not seem to do well in terms of the click-through-rate for AdSense ads. The determinants in terms of whether or not an individual will click an ad are numerous. The whole process of getting a pair of eye balls to an ad and then he/she decides to click it is part art and part science with psychology thrown to the mix. I have only discussed the technical aspects. What about the psychological aspect.
One determinant in terms of whether or not a visitor clicks an ad is what type of mood they are in. This is why some websites do better then others in terms of the click-through-rate for AdSense ads. Two types of sites which produce the highest click through rate are:
1) Sites where people want to buy products and or services.
2) Informational sites which may lead an individual to buy something. Some examples of these sites are sites which have music reviews, sites with video reviews, vacation information sites, medical information sites, and many others. The site does not have to be selling anything directly, but is a good source for information about products or services. Many informational sites can fall within this group.
Google AdSense - Conclusion
We have looked at the technical and psychological aspects of trying to get visitors to click on the Google AdSense ads. Success using the Google AdSense program really comes down to this. Are you willing to put forth the effort and hard work to make it work? Follow the principles presented here and you can become part of the minority of publishers who are doing very well with Google AdSense.
